Healthcare is an ever-expanding and growing industry. Even before the covid 19 pandemic, this industry was expected to continue to grow exponentially through 2029.
Then, things accelerated — and shifted.
Over the course of 2020, we saw services move online wherever there was an opportunity. This was especially true for the healthcare industry. One study about telehealth showed that only 11% of patients had used telemedicine visits in 2019. That number jumped to 46% of people taking advantage a telehealth service in 2020. This is just one example of a shift in healthcare. And every shift has the potential to open more doors to those who work from home.

In the past, it may have been difficult to wrap your head around just what a remote nursing job may entail. After all, we tend to think about nurses taking temperatures and blood pressure. Those usually aren’t tasks you can complete over the internet (unless you’re using technology for remote patient monitoring). There are plenty of duties that can be handled on the web, however!
What Does a Remote Nurse Do?
A remote nurse uses technology such as telephone and web camera to assess symptoms, discuss medications, conduct follow-up calls, counsel and offer tips for medical conditions and more. They may also serve as a case manager.
How Do You Get a Job as a Remote Nurse?
The vast majority of remote nursing jobs require a valid registered nurse license. In some cases, there may be state restrictions. As with any remote job, read the job listing completely and carefully.

Health and wellness coaching jobs and requirements vary greatly. Some coaches focus on overall wellness, nutrition and eating habits. Others may offer mental health services. Some roles not only offer support but may also dispense medications, therefore requiring valid licensure. Other opportunities may only require a recent Associates’ Degree and some background in a specific field like nutrition or psychology. Some services conduct their coaching via webcam, others are text or app-only.

There has been a rise in healthcare consulting as more and more services are offered online and many doctors and office administrators may be unfamiliar with everything that goes with offering virtual care.
Medical Coding Jobs
Even before the pandemic, it was estimated that more than 50% of medical coders worked in a fully remote position. As you can imagine, those numbers have grown.
That being said, medical coding jobs — like many industries — are experiencing COVID-related struggles. This is an industry to watch and if you are interested, you should plan to excel and specialize to make your services more desirable and in demand.
What Are Medical Coding Jobs?
As a medical coder, you will input the uniform information necessary to properly and efficiently bill insurance companies for patient visits. Coders are able to translate healthcare providers’ reports into billing codes for insurance. Unlike a medical billing specialist, coders do not follow up on payment. They are solely responsible for inputting the data.
How Do You Get Started in Medical Coding?
Medical codes must be consistent and accurate in order for a physician to be paid. This requires proper training. There are hundreds of thousands of codes used for everything from what can make you sick to surgeries to supplies. There are also specialized codes for everything from dentistry to cancer.
A remote medical coder will also need to learn the rules and laws that apply to accessing healthcare information in addition to learning the basics of terminology, anatomy and physiology.
